HSI
At Metropolitan State University of Denver, there is a need of greater representation of the institution’s diversity, particularly in regard to the Hispanic community. In order to earn the distinction of being an Hispanic Serving Institution, the university must have a full-time enrollment of at least twenty-five percent Hispanic students. This designation allows the university to qualify for more grants that benefit the entire student body.
SOLUTION
As a way of celebrating diversity, this interactive installation breaks down any stereotypes one might have regarding another culture different than their own. In the location of highest foot traffic on campus, the installation encourages passersby to engage with their community by stringing each peg they identify with while literally weaving their identity and characteristics within others. This installation creates a safe space for all to participate, understand, and celebrate diversity and inclusion.
