project: proposed package re-design for Back to the Roots™
photography provided by Back to the Roots™
PROBLEM
A lack of fresh food options within a reasonable walking distance in lower-income, gentrified neighborhoods, creates what is typically called a food desert. Food deserts are all too common and there is a great need for healthy food options in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods in Denver.
SOLUTION
I envision addressing this food desert issue by creating a kit called Aquafarm that when purchased by a higher-income demographic, two are donated to a family in need and a local inner-city school. This kit is designed specifically designed for Back to the Roots™ and comes complete with a fully equipped aquaponics mini ecosystem. Aquafarm can become a catalyst in thinking about organically grown and fresh food becoming easily-accessible. This also creates an opportunity tolearn about the invaluable process of growing and harvesting ones’ own food, an opportunity lower-income neighborhoods rarely get to experience.
